Live Music

FRIDAY NIGHT IS MUSIC NIGHT

Join us every Friday Night at 9pm (Bar open from 8pm) for a fantastic night of live music. Our bar is open until midnight with a delicious selection of cocktails plus wines, Welsh ales and ciders, lagers and a great range of spirits!

Every Friday is different – on the first Friday of every month it’s the Open Mic Night, and we welcome a host of local musicians to the stage.

Every other Friday could range from 50’s rock and roll to punk metal, from Ska bands to Classical Harpists, party bands to folk music.

We welcome all genres and always want to support new bands and musicians. If you would like to play at one of our Friday nights, please contact us.

OPEN MIC NIGHT

Join us on the first Friday of every month for our Open Mic Night. This is always a fantastic night of live music from talented local musicians, and frequently visitors from further afield.

Open Mic Nights have been running at the Magic Lantern since 2011, and many musicians have made their debut performances here, sometimes their own material and sometimes covering their favourite songs - acts from ages 8 to 80 years old.

Tickets are £3 or free if you have attended the film beforehand, if you’re a member, or if you’re performing.

We welcome all styles of music, folk to rock to jazz, with some fun pedals thrown in (we even had a psytrance DJ once) - either way you won't find a more appreciative and respectful audience.

If you are a performer who would like to play at the open mic it is essential to book a slot as we are frequently oversubscribed. This is a music night only, not spoken word or comedy and our only rule is that all vocal performers must be accompanied by live instruments (no backing tracks or acapella solos) Performers – Get in touch here to book a 15 min slot.

We encourage all newbies (and oldies) to share their music with us and keep the Lantern a hub for our fantastic local music scene.

Here at the Magic Lantern, we pride ourselves on being more than just a cinema venue. We’ve extended our main stage, invested in lighting and sound equipment, and expanded our food and drinks menu to offer both our community and visitors a truly unique experience.

From children-focused activities to ceilidhs, from workshops to community events, and from music concerts to our legendary film-themed party nights, we create something for everyone.

Discounted Screenings

We have lots of different types of screenings where you can save some money!

Magic Mondays

Every Monday (Term Time) at 11am.

The showings are RELAXED, meaning they have subtitles, the sound is slightly lower, and the lights remain partially lit. Babies in arms (under 1) are welcome, the bar is open throughout, and our usual code of conduct does not apply.

A FREE tea or filter coffee is included in your £4.50 film ticket cost!

Teen Screen

Every Wednesday at 4pm.

The Lantern will be open from 3pm so Tywyn School pupils are welcome to come straight from school.

Tickets for 12 - 19 year olds are £5.50 and include a small popcorn and a soft drink or juice/cordial.

All welcome but standard tickets apply to non teens.

Little Lanteners

Every Sunday at 11am.

All tickets are £3.50.

Anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Anyone over 18 must be accompanied by a child!

Golden Agers

Every Thursday afternoon.

If you are over the golden age of 60 then tickets are £4.50 and include a cup of tea or filter coffee.

All welcome but standard ticket prices apply to those under 60.

Accessible Screenings

The Magic Lantern wants to make sure everyone feels welcome. We currently have two types of accessible screenings, but we are always looking for ways to improve our venue to accommodate for people with additional needs. If you have any suggestions or want to chat to us about what we can do to improve, please don’t hesitate to contact us - we would really love to hear from you. Drop us an email here

Hard of Hearing (or Descriptive Subtitles)

Every Monday evening our film will have descriptive subtitles. This means that in addition to the dialogue being subtitled (as with a foreign language film) the sounds of the film are also described in the subtitles. For example (joyful music plays) or (gunshots in background)

Relaxed Screenings

During our Relaxed Screenings, we relax our Code of Conduct. We appreciate not everyone wants to sit still for a long time in complete darkness and that the ‘normal’ level of sound in a cinema may be a bit much for some.

So, in these screenings we:

• Keep the lights on low
• Turn down the sound
• You are free to move around
• You don’t have to remain silent
• We keep the bar open so you can get more drinks and snacks if you like
• The hatch from the bar to the cinema stays open so you can leave the auditorium but still watch the film

Film Club

Film Club

Do you love films, and love talking about films? Then why not join our Magic Lantern Film Club!

Our Film Club is a regular chance for people who love films to get together to discuss them.

Every month, we pick a few titles from our main programme, and meet to chat about it after the screening. The bar will remain open for those who fancy a drink.

We welcome anyone with a passion for films, from enthusiasts to aficionados or even someone who knows nothing about films except they enjoy watching them! We hold friendly and informal conversations, while also providing some extra information about the film, the cast and the director where relevant.

If you are on Facebook, you can join our Film Club Group. We use this group to learn more about what type of films you like the most, for sharing additional insights about the films we choose, as well as any suggestions you may have.

Iaith I Bawb

Iaith i Bawb

We’re thrilled to launch a brand-new season of Welsh language films and events in collaboration with We Learn Welsh – Iaith i Bawb. This year-long project celebrates and strengthens our connections with Welsh speakers and learners, both here in our community and further afield.

The FILM part of the season 'Sgrin a Sgwrs' is supported by Ffilm Cymru through their Film Exhibitor Fund, which comes from the National Lottery via the Welsh Government and the Arts Council of Wales. For the next year there will be at least 2 screenings a month of a film made in Welsh with hosted opportunities to learn and chat about the film afterwards.

Our programme will showcase a rich mix of storytelling – from animations and documentaries to shorts and feature films – including the eagerly awaited Tanau’r Lloer (Fires of the Moon), premiering this November.
