Trilogy
The epic and groundbreaking trilogy directed by Peter Jackson returns to the big screen for the 25th anniversary of the release of its first instalment, The Fellowship of the Ring, in 2001. Jackson had been cultivating the project from a young age, having fallen in love with J.R.R. Tolkien’s acclaimed fantasy novel. He experimented with special effects in his early films before finally co-writing, producing, and filming the three movies simultaneously over more than a year entirely in New Zealand, boosting the country’s film industry and tourism in the process.
It was one of the biggest and most ambitious film projects ever undertaken, featuring an unparalleled mix of practical effects, miniatures, real-life costumes and props, as well as groundbreaking computer graphics. This included redefining motion capture for the unforgettable character of Gollum and establishing Wētā Workshop as one of the most talented creative companies in the world. The trilogy also boasts an incredible ensemble cast, combining experienced and iconic actors such as Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett, and Ian McKellen, while giving others international recognition, including Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, and many more.
The series has received numerous accolades, including 17 Academy Awards, with The Return of the King winning Best Picture—the first fantasy film ever to do so. Today, The Lord of the Rings is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential film series ever made. Now is your chance to experience the trilogy once again on the big screen, with the extended editions that add even more magic to the world of Middle-earth. Given the length of each feature, the bar will remain open throughout the film. Don’t miss these special screenings!

The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings returns for a special anniversary! It has been exactly 25 years since the first instalment, The Fellowship of the Ring, was released in 2001. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece, the film introduces us to Middle-earth, where the young hobbit Frodo, along with eight companions, embarks on a perilous journey to destroy the One Ring that the Dark Lord Sauron desperately seeks. Acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, the film marked a landmark in filmmaking and an achievement for the fantasy genre.
The Fellowship of the Ring returns to the big screen in its extended edition, featuring numerous extra scenes that were not included in the original cinema release but appeared in the special edition DVD. The bar will remain open throughout the film, so you’ll have the chance to grab an extra refreshment or snack.
The Two Towers
The second part of Peter Jackson’s masterpiece trilogy returns to the Magic Lantern to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the first instalment. The Two Towers follows three main storylines as the Fellowship is broken: Frodo and Sam continue their journey to Mordor to destroy the One Ring; Merry and Pippin escape their orc captors; and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli arrive in the war-torn nation of Rohan.
A favourite of many, The Two Towers introduces one of the most unforgettable characters of the trilogy, Gollum (played by Andy Serkis), whose motion-capture visual effects set a new standard at the time. It also features one of the most impressive and epic battles ever filmed. We will be screening the extended version, which includes numerous extra scenes compared with the original 2002 theatrical release. The bar will stay open throughout the film, so you can treat yourself to an extra drink or snack.
The Return of the King
The third and unforgettable conclusion of The Lord of the Rings saga returns to the big screen to celebrate the trilogy’s 25th anniversary. Frodo and Sam follow Gollum towards Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring, unaware of Gollum’s intentions to betray them, while Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and their allies join forces against Sauron and his legions from Mordor.
The Return of the King became the first fantasy film to win Best Picture, earning ten additional accolades at the 76th Academy Awards and becoming only the third film to win 11 Oscars, tying with Ben-Hur and Titanic. This screening will feature the extended version, including numerous extra sequences that were not included in the original 2003 theatrical cut. The bar will remain open during the screening!
