On 27 September 2023, two journalists, sons of refugee mothers, meet online to share their Gaza stories. Mike Joseph is Welsh and unable to enter Gaza. Sami Abu Salem is Palestinian and unable to escape. Seventy-six years ago, Mike’s uncle was in a Jewish brigade which destroyed the Palestinian village of Burayr, from where Fatima, Sami’s future mother, escaped to Gaza.
Ten years earlier, Nazis expelled Lilli, Mike’s future mother, from her home in Germany, to become a refugee in Wales. Today, three generations of Mike’s and Sami’s families have grown up in their places of refuge, Wales and Gaza. Their conversation reveals a very personal, even intimate history of the long Nakba, reaching a startling question: Is coexistence possible? Answers come ten days later. Hamas invades Israel, Israel replies with lethal force on Gaza, Sami and his family flee south towards Rafah. Half the film rushes are buried under rubble. Is their hopeful dialogue also lost in the devastation?
