Can you believe that the Magic Lantern has its own house band? Neither can we. Let alone one that has released an EP of their own music.
MLB as they are affectionately known, formed back in 2018 when someone realised there was a number
of very skilled musicians on the team. Rowan played the bass, Chris, the drums, Sam, the saxophone and Ella plays guitar and sings like a funky angel. Giles, our occasional carpenter, stepped in to play guitar and the core of MLB was born.
Over the years other people have come and gone (Jan – they still miss you) and guest players have joined the band for specific gigs – The Blues Brothers in 2019 had a massive twelve members!
In 2019, lovely Lisa added keyboard to the mix and now the band is in demand. This past year they have played Doldrums, The Big Tribute, Sesiwn Fawr, Mach Motorcycle Fest, Gogstock and regular gigs in Aberystwyth.
We are so proud of them that we hardly mind at all that any outside gig means we lose most of our staff for the night!
Home is The Lantern though and not only do they often close up our Open Mic nights, but they also collaborate with and support other musicians.
They perform gigs at Friday Night is Music Nights, have been hired for private parties at the cinema and they create specific themed sets for our legendary party nights.
In addition to all this they have been writing their own music and shortly before Christmas they spent a few days with Mike West’s 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor to record their first EP.
Sunrays is a beautiful recording that truly captures the talent, soul and dedication of this very special group of musicians.
