The Magic Lantern Environmental And Sustainability Policy

INTRODUCTION

The Magic Lantern aspires to minimise its impact on the natural environment and maximise the effective use of resources. We strive to increase communication and awareness of our efforts and to foster responsible environmental behaviour amongst staff, volunteers, and customers. The Magic Lantern is committed to complying with applicable law in all of its operations and also to achieving excellent environmental performance.

PURPOSE

This Environmental Sustainability Policy aims to integrate a philosophy of sustainable development into all the organisation’s activities and to establish and promote sound environmental practice in our operations.

POLICY

The Magic Lantern commits itself to minimising its impact on our environment by;

• Providing a safe and healthy workplace.
• Having an environmentally sustainably aware culture, where responsibility is assigned and understood.
• Being an environmentally responsible neighbour in our community.
• Conserving natural resources by reusing and recycling.
• Using, in our own operations, processes that do not adversely affect the environment.
• Aiming for the responsible use of energy throughout the organisation.
• Participating in efforts to improve environmental protection and understanding.
• Taking steps to improve environmental performance continually.
• Working with suppliers who promote sound environmental practices; and
• Including in our film programme content that enhances awareness among our employees, volunteers and audiences – educating and motivating them to act in an environmentally responsible manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES

It shall be the responsibility of the Directors to establish and maintain policies and procedures and to bring these procedures into effect.

It shall be the responsibility of the Venue Managers to ensure implementation of these policies and procedures.

Procedures

1. The Magic Lantern will develop guidelines for staff and volunteers to adopt sound environmental work practices, and adequate training will be provided to ensure these practices are carried out.
2. The Magic Lantern will use reasonable endeavours to reuse and recycle materials, purchase recycled materials and use recyclable packaging and other materials.
3. The Magic Lantern will work with environmental groups such as Greener Tywyn to work towards community initiatives such as Plastic Free Towns, Electric Car Charging station project and others.
4. The Magic Lantern will continue to work towards becoming Plastic Free and removing use of all single use products from our organisation.
5. The Magic Lantern will use its position in the community to raise awareness of environmental issues and solutions by programming regular environmental films and making our cinema available for environmental educational events.
6. The Magic Lantern will use all reasonable endeavours to ensure that its services and products are safe, efficient in their use of energy, protective of the environment, and are reusable, recyclable, or disposed of safely.
7. The Magic Lantern will use all reasonable endeavours to minimise materials and energy use, prevent air, water, and other pollution, and dispose of waste safely and responsibly.
8. The Magic Lantern will use all reasonable endeavours to conserve energy by improving energy efficiency and giving preference to renewable over non-renewable energy sources when feasible.
9. The Magic Lantern will use all reasonable endeavours to contribute to the maintenance and increase of biodiversity through its management of its small land areas.
10. The Magic Lantern will use all reasonable endeavours to meet or exceed all applicable government requirements and voluntary requirements generally observed in its field, and will, in addition, adhere to the more stringent requirements of its own environmental policy.
11. In order to continually improve its environmental management system, The Magic Lantern will use reasonable endeavours to conduct audits and self-assessments of its compliance with this policy.
12. The Magic Lantern will maintain an open and honest dialogue with staff, volunteers and the public about the environmental performance of its operations and services.
13. The Magic Lantern will use reasonable endeavours to ensure that every employee, volunteer and contractor is informed of and expected to follow this policy and to report any environmental, health, or safety concern to management so that prompt action may be taken.
